RCMP Searching For Man After Assault With an Axe in Thorburn.

Update 11:40 a.m.

John Douglas Cress has been safely arrested. Emergency alert has been cancelled. Officers will remain in the area to continue with their investigation.


Update 10:55 a.m.

Pictou County District RCMP is continuing the search for John Cress. The victim and Cress are known to each other. REMINDER: Stay away from area; emergency alert is active and residents are advised to shelter in place. Officers have observed people driving through the area who want to see what is happening.

The search is being assisted by the RCMP’s Colchester County District, Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and Air Services.


RCMP searching for 61-year-old John Douglas Cress in relation to an assault with an axe at a home on Greenwood St., Thorburn. One person injured Residents of Thorburn advised to shelter in place. Cress fled into woods and is believed to be on foot.

Cress is described as five feet ten inches tall, grey hair and blue eyes.

He may be wearing a long sleeve grey sweatshirt and shorts.

Emergency alert issued to Pictou, Antigonish and Colchester Counties.
