Multiple Community Groups to Receive Funding.

People in Antigonish County will see significant improvements to existing facilities and trails with provincial grants announced today, June 25.

“It’s important to maintain infrastructure that contributes to the quality of life in the community,” said Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness and MLA for Antigonish, on behalf of Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “These facilities and organizations provide both support and opportunities for residents to stay healthy, safe and comfortable.”

The Canadian Association for Community Living Antigonish received funding to install a generator so it can serve as a community comfort centre during extreme weather events and prolonged power outages.

The Antigonish Community Food Bank, which helps nearly 130 families every month, received funding to complete an extension to its building to allow more storage space and installation of a freezer and shelving.

Other organizations are also receiving provincial grants for upgrades:

  • Festival Antigonish Society – enhance electrical system and upgrade fire door
  • L’Arche Antigonish – install a generator for a community comfort centre
  • Pomquet Development Society – replace wooden shingles and exterior doors
  • Songwriters and Storytellers Society – install new vinyl siding, exterior doors and bathroom fixtures
  • Keppoch Mountain – rebuild three trails damaged by extreme weather
  • Municipality of the County of Antigonish – develop multi-use pathways to connect existing roadways, sidewalks and trails
  • Town of Antigonish – expand and resurface the trail in Arbour Drive Park.

These community grants are part of a series of announcements taking place across the province.
