Funding for Community Infrastructure in Cumberland County.

Communities in Cumberland County will benefit from improvements to facilities with provincial grants announced today, August 29.

“Collaborating with community organizations is the most impactful way to advance initiatives and create solutions that benefit communities,” said Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables and MLA for Cumberland South, on behalf of Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “These grants will help ensure that the places dedicated to enhancing the spiritual, emotional, social and physical well-being of residents will thrive for many years to come.”

The volunteer-run Northumberland Community Curling Club in Pugwash received funding for accessibility improvements to the washroom, ramp and signs.

The North Cumberland Historical Society, which preserves the history and genealogy of the north Cumberland County area, received funding to reconstruct the entrance, improve the heating system and renovate the ground floor of the building in Pugwash.

Other organizations in Cumberland County are also receiving provincial grants for upgrades:

  • Amherst Wesleyan Church – replace the roof
  • Springhill Junction Society Community Hall – repair doors and windows, and install a generator
  • Northport Community Organization – install three heat pumps
  • Six Rivers Hope Centre Ministries – install a generator
  • Westchester Firefighters Auxiliary – purchase a commercial dishwasher.

These community grants are part of a series of announcements taking place across the province.

Quotes:

“The Westchester Firefighters Auxiliary is very excited to receive this grant of $5,000 for an industrial dishwasher. This addition to our kitchen will improve our catering and rental options. It will also decrease our use of disposable items and make us more environmentally friendly. As our hall is used as a comfort centre during an emergency event, meal prep and cleanup will be much improved with the dishwasher. The support from the Province of Nova Scotia through Communities Culture, Tourism and Heritage is much appreciated.”
— Rosemary Carter, President, Westchester Firefighters Auxiliary
