Man Receives Large Fine and Catch Forfeit After Fishing Related Guilty Plea.
On November 4, Gordon Reyno pleaded guilty to discarding and not recording groundfish bycatch in the waters off Eastern Nova Scotia. He also pleaded guilty to catching, processing and filleting fish so that its species, size and weight could not be checked for compliance with fishing regulations. He was sentenced to pay $15,000 and forfeit over $1,778 worth of groundfish catch.
Bycatch is fish harvested despite not being targeted. Depending on the fishery, certain amounts and kinds of bycatch may be permitted and must be retained and reported to the department.
Accurate reporting of catch is essential to the sustainability and conservation of our fishery resources.
