Antigonish County District and Inverness County District RCMP are appealing to the public to identify two people of interest in relation to reports of \u201cpickpocket\u201d and debit card scammers who are active at grocery stores and retailers in the Antigonish and Port Hawkesbury areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators learned the scammers obtain victims\u2019 debit card PIN numbers by watching shoppers complete transactions. Once the scammers know the PIN, they use a distraction to switch the bank card in the card machine or will pickpocket the victim as they are leaving the store or getting into their vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help protect your debit or credit card PIN and yourself, be sure to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u2022 Cover the keypad: Shield the keypad with your hand or body while entering your PIN, even at trusted stores.\n \u2022 Check for skimmers: Look for anything unusual or loose around card readers. If something feels off, trust your instinct.\n \u2022 Avoid help from strangers: Never accept help with using an ATM or card machine.\n \u2022 Use tap-to-pay or mobile wallets: Digital wallets help keep your card information encrypted and your PIN safe.\n \u2022 Review your statements regularly: Regularly check your bank account for unusual transactions and report them immediately.\n \u2022  Enable alerts: Set up instant purchase alerts so you're notified the moment your card is used.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n
