St. Martha\u2019s Regional Hospital was founded by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in 1906 to respond to the community\u2019s needs. The Sisters have built a legacy that shaped healthcare in Antigonish, the surrounding communities and across the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sisters\u2019 stewardship, service and leadership in healthcare includes much more than the delivery of exemplary care; it has also contributed to the education and preparation of thousands of healthcare professionals including nurses, lab technicians and X-ray technicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Congregation has given notice they will conclude their role as sponsors of the Mission Assurance Agreement held with the Department of Health and Wellness and Nova Scotia Health (NSH) since 1996. The Department and NSH have accepted the Congregation\u2019s decision, and the agreement will conclude on September 30, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In light of the Sisters\u2019 decision, the Department and NSH looked at options for the future of the hospital and the care provided there, including the Sisters\u2019 request to consider the possibility of another sponsor. After review and careful consideration, the decision was made not to move forward with a new sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the current agreement concludes, the services and policies at St. Martha\u2019s will more closely align with all other hospitals across Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On behalf of the Department and Nova Scotia Health, I want to extend the deepest gratitude to the Sisters of St. Martha for their unwavering care, commitment and leadership. The Sisters\u2019 120 years of service and stewardship have had an immeasurable impact on healthcare and are deeply rooted and felt throughout the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We will work together to conclude the agreement over the coming months. We will honour the legacy of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha and the long-standing commitment they have had to the hospital and the community of Antigonish and eastern Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
