{"id":6662,"date":"2024-03-28T13:37:08","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T16:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpress.ca\/?p=6662"},"modified":"2024-03-28T13:37:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-28T16:37:08","slug":"province-puts-cap-on-new-international-student-applications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpress.ca\/index.php\/2024\/03\/28\/province-puts-cap-on-new-international-student-applications\/","title":{"rendered":"Province Puts Cap on New International Student Applications."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Province released international student allocations for post-secondary institutions today, March 28, following the federal government\u2019s changes to its international study permit program to decrease the number of international students coming to Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government provided Nova Scotia with the total number of students allowed under the new program cap and required the Province to distribute them among its institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of study permit applications for Nova Scotia is 12,900 this year, down about 7,000 from last year. They will be distributed among 32 designated learning institutions (those approved to accept international students):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>11,565 to the province\u2019s 10 universities and Nova Scotia Community College<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>710 to a dozen private career colleges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>526 to nine language schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Province will hold back 99 application spaces to allow for some flexibility to respond to unexpected circumstances and new programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInternational students are important to our province\u2019s growth and economy, and we want them to have a good experience when they come to study, live and work here,\u201d said Brian Wong, Minister of Advanced Education. \u201cWe\u2019ve taken a thoughtful approach to allocating the federal cap across the province, considering many factors like enrolment in our high-needs programs and managing growth in communities. That said, we will continue to advocate for a greater allocation from the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With today\u2019s announcement, institutions can now request attestation letters from the Province for first-year international students they\u2019ve accepted.
