This was the first review of the workers\u2019 compensation system in more than 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to express my thanks to the review committee for all their work over the past year that will help inform our efforts to make the workers\u2019 compensation system better,\u201d said Jill Balser, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration. \u201cMy Department can now begin to examine the recommendations to determine the best approach for making substantive changes to the system for all Nova Scotians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 10 priority areas in the committee\u2019s 84-page report include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>system sustainability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>injury prevention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>awareness and understand of the system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>claims administration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>supporting safe and timely return-to-work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compensation and benefits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coverage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>psychological health and safety and gradual onset stress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reviews and appeals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>system transparency and accountability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The nine-member review committee included employers, employees and injured workers. It held provincewide engagement sessions, gathering insights from participants and industry and sector groups, as well as from other jurisdictions, to help inform the report\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This review is part of a series of ongoing work to improve workplace safety, the workers\u2019 compensation system and address psychological injury in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quotes:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Nova Scotia, we have some of the highest employer premiums, the lowest benefits for workers who are unable to work due to injury, the longest duration of injured workers off work due to injury, and among the lowest percentage of workforce coverage in Nova Scotia. The recommendations in this report offer a path for Nova Scotia to make substantive changes to the workers\u2019 compensation system that will address some of these key issues and more while considering both employer and employee or injured worker needs.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Douglas Reid, Chair, Workers\u2019 Compensation Review Committee<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWCB Nova Scotia is grateful for the work of the Nova Scotia Workers\u2019 Compensation Review Committee.
