Town of New Glasgow Releases Statement Regarding Local Homeless Shelter.

Statement from the Town of New Glasgow

During its August 17, 2026, meeting, New Glasgow Town Council passed a motion calling on the Province of Nova Scotia to close the local homeless shelter and work with the Town and community partners on a transition plan.

The plan would ensure individuals currently accessing the shelter continue to receive appropriate housing, mental health, addiction, and other supports. Council firmly believes the current emergency shelter model, operating as is and where is, is not adequately addressing the complex needs of people experiencing chronic homelessness and addiction.

Council is calling for a more comprehensive, health-focused continuum of care that includes treatment, residential rehabilitation programs, mental health supports in addition to counselling services and staff who can support pathways to supportive and transitional housing.

The goal of the Town is to move beyond an emergency shelter model and towards coordinated services that provide meaningful pathways to treatment, recovery, and housing for those experiencing crisis.
