36 Year Old Woman Charged After Fleeing Police in Stolen Truck.
Inverness County District RCMP has charged a 36-year-old Scotchtown woman after she fled from police in a stolen truck, drove dangerously through Inverness and Antigonish counties, and nearly struck police vehicles.
On June 23, at approximately 1:35 p.m., RCMP officers attempted to stop a stolen grey Chevrolet Silverado travelling south on Hwy. 344 in Aulds Cove. After initially pulling over, the driver reversed toward a police vehicle before fleeing at a high rate of speed.
The truck travelled east on Hwy. 104, weaving into oncoming traffic. After becoming stuck in traffic near the Canso Causeway, the driver reversed along the highway in the wrong direction, nearly striking another police vehicle. Officers did not pursue the truck due to public safety concerns.
About five minutes later, RCMP responded to a 911 report of the Silverado travelling west on Hwy. 104 toward Antigonish at high speed while passing vehicles in the oncoming lane. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate it.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., Antigonish County District RCMP located the driver on Old Mulgrave Rd. and arrested her.
Tanya Marie Young, 36, of Scotchtown, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, and offences related to breaching a release order.
Young was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Antigonish Provincial Court on July 15.
